Fortunately for gun rights enthusiasts, Virginia law requires a two-thirds majority to override the governor’s veto pen. That statutory limitation saved the day and previewed future legislative battles in the Old Dominion.

At issue was HB 1607, a controversial measure that attempted to impose a blanket ban on Modern Sporting Rifles (MSRs) and gun magazines falsely smeared as “high capacity.”

The bill passed both chambers along party lines, and only Gov. Glenn Youngkin (R) stood in the way. Fortunately, that was enough.

The governor did as expected, sending the doomed bill back to the legislature. The Virginia House of Delegates reconvened in an attempt to override several proposals blocked by Youngkin, but the assembly’s rules spelled defeat.

HB 1607 was narrowly approved 50-48 in the House of Delegates and 21-15 in the Senate. Though enough to send it to the governor’s desk, these margins were nowhere near the tally necessary to override the veto.

Lawful ownership of semi-automatic rifles and standard capacity magazines is safe in Virginia. But for how long?

This is a critical year in Virginia politics, as voters in November will choose who they will send to Richmond and the governor’s mansion. Anti-gun forces knew they did not have a chance to override Youngkin’s veto, but they clearly wanted to establish a platform plank for the fall elections.

One that placed them squarely against Second Amendment rights.

Will Virginia go the way of notorious abusers of gun rights such as California and New York? Or will it remain with the dozens of states that respect and protect the fundamental freedom to keep and bear arms?

Youngkin was elected to the Governor’s Mansion in 2022 in what many viewed as an upset. Rural voters outnumbered the state’s urban areas and rejected former Gov. Terry McAuliffe’s (D) anti-gun policies.

Despite this mandate from the electorate, the legislature stubbornly clings to policies that would strip gun rights from law-abiding citizens. This stance will be tested yet again in November.
