A Georgia suspect discovered in the worst possible way Friday evening that Southern hospitality does not extend to violent criminals attempting to carjack an innocent victim.
DeKalb County Police Department officials reported that the deadly encounter unfolded in the Atlanta suburb of Stone Mountain. The intended victim was in the parking lot of the Sister 2 Sister Cafe when a stranger allegedly accosted him.
It was daylight, just after 6 p.m., when the suspected carjacker targeted the man. The suspect likely believed that he chose an easy mark, as violent criminals generally do not expect resistance.
However, he was proven wrong.
The citizen was armed and ready and fired at least one shot to protect himself against the attack. The suspect was struck and went down in the parking lot.
Responding authorities attempted to save his life, but the alleged carjacker succumbed to his injuries a short time later.
The identities of the suspect and his intended target have not been released, and there is no word on potential charges against the shooter.
On the surface, legal trouble for the man who defended himself appears unlikely. Georgia is a strong Stand Your Ground state that recognizes the fundamental freedom of all law-abiding citizens to protect themselves in the face of a violent attack.
Unlike some other jurisdictions, Peach State residents are not required to turn tail and run at the first sign of trouble. While it is always advisable to de-escalate a confrontation if possible, that option is generally not available for a person who is singled out for a carjacking attempt.
That’s where the Second Amendment enters the conversation.
The man in Stone Mountain who faced the threat last week might have met a much different fate if he were not armed. He is undoubtedly thankful today that he was ready for the unexpected and courageous enough to act quickly and decisively.
