A protective order may be a valuable tool for protecting the innocent and alerting law enforcement to a person’s danger. It may also serve as a warning to an individual that authorities are aware of their behavior and that there will be consequences if specific actions are taken.
Then again, it may not be worth the paper it is printed on.
Suspect used hammer to break right on through protection order
The latter was the case Thursday morning when a suspect allegedly invaded a home in Gulfport, Mississippi. Both female occupants had a protection order against 29-year-old Dangelon Rayjvon Murphy of Gulfport, for what good that did them.
After all, the suspect was already out of jail on bond for allegedly kidnapping one of the two intended victims.
At about 7 a.m. Murphy allegedly broke into the residence through a window with a hammer and a knife. As he gained entry, one of the female occupants suffered what was later described as a minor knife wound.
Having a loaded firearm may have saved two women’s lives
One of the women ran to another room to seek shelter, while the other grabbed a firearm and got off at least one shot. That was all it took to end the threat.
Responding officers found Murphy dead, and the county coroner later identified him. No other injuries besides the minor knife wound were reported, and both women must feel incredibly fortunate today.
However, the truth is that fortune played little to no role in their surviving this violent attack. Credit should instead go to the person who had the foresight to have a firearm ready and available while the protection order was in place.
Just in case that order turned out to be worth less than the paper it was printed on.
