Virginia’s substantial anti-gun rights lobby repeatedly charged into a brick wall pushing new gun control for the past few years. The reason? Former Gov. Glenn Youngkin (R) was a stalwart defender of the Second Amendment and successfully held off the split legislature.
That was then, this is now.
Now, this same cabal is foaming at the mouth with Abigail Spanberger (D) voted in as the newest occupant of the Governor’s Mansion. And with her promise to sign virtually any and every infringement on the right to keep and bear arms, proposals are piling up fast and furious.
Lawmakers want to make criminals out of thousands of Virginia citizens
There is already a push to ban standard capacity firearm magazines capable of holding more than 10 rounds. As with most of these bills, it contains a “grandfather clause” that exempts current owners of these popular accessories.
This is typically included to make the legislation more palatable for those who hesitate to strip constitutional rights from law-abiding citizens.
But that provision is no longer enough for gun rights opponents. Instead, some Virginia lawmakers currently support a new proposal that would remove this language from the proposed ban and criminalize thousands of upstanding citizens.
Assistant AG responded quickly to the move by Virginia’s anti-2A lobby
The Department of Justice (DOJ) noted the radical change, and Assistant Attorney General for Civil Rights Harmeet Dhillon dismissed the move as unlawful political posturing. “This is a blatant violation of Supreme Court precedent, and it will not stand.”
Make no mistake, banning these standard capacity magazines that are enjoyed by millions of gun owning Americans is wrong and will be challenged.
But anti-gunners, drunk on their newfound power, want to go much further and make such magazines completely illegal. This travesty will undoubtedly be challenged in court, and it should be swept aside.
