It’s that time of year, unfortunately, when anti-Second Amendment lawmakers trot out more tired proposals intended to infringe on the right to keep and bear arms.
And increasingly, state officials are copying blueprints from California’s notorious gun control regime. The Golden State recently banned Glock and Glock-type clones merely because some criminals illegally convert these weapons into automatic functionality.
Despite the immediate federal lawsuit launched against the California law, Maryland is about to follow in its footsteps.
Anti-gunners now target specific models of popular firearms
On Wednesday, the state House approved HB 577 by a 92-39 tally. This followed the passage of a similar measure in the Senate in March with a 28-16 roll call vote.
The bills claim these handguns are “machine gun convertible” and seek their ban despite the use of so-called “Glock switches” already being prohibited. If signed by Gov. Wes Moore (D), Maryland will ban the “manufacturing, selling, offering for sale, purchasing, receiving, or transferring” of the pistols already in wide circulation.
There is no doubt that Moore will quickly sign the sweeping ban into law.
Gun rights opponents applaud Maryland’s pending Glock ban
It has long been the goal of anti-gunners to wipe out entire classes of firearms. Look no further than bans on AR-15s and similar models for proof that gun rights opponents seek to disarm law-abiding Americans incrementally.
Everytown for Gun Safety’s Monisha Henley praised Maryland lawmakers for attempting to wipe a popular firearm out of existence. “We applaud the House for prioritizing the safety of Maryland families over the profits of negligent manufacturers.”
Of course they do.
Upon Moore’s expected signature, the Maryland Department of State Police will publish a list of banned pistols. The new law will undoubtedly confront a stiff legal challenge from Second Amendment supporters just as California’s does.
