In retrospect, gun shop employees are likely not the best targets for a violent criminal mob—especially when they were not even the people the group intended to confront.
A worker of Central Texas Gun Works (CTGW) in Austin is alive and in one piece today, largely thanks to having a legal firearm in his possession Friday night. His colleague who went with him to the Cabana Club survived but was not so fortunate.
Now the two alleged victims face murder charges. Texas is Texas, but Austin is a very different entity.
Apparent self-defense scenario still led to serious charges
Police were called to the establishment’s parking lot at around 8:40 p.m. on reports of a massive disturbance. Investigators believe a large group of people misidentified the two gun store employees as others and attacked them.
One of the innocent victims was beaten so severely that he suffered a skull fracture and rib injuries. The second target fared better as he was armed and ready.
He fired at least one shot, fatally striking a suspect.

Incredibly, both employees are at last report in the Travis County Jail charged with murder.
CTGW owner Michael Cargill defended his worker who fired the lethal shot as a person forced into a horrible situation. “My employee did exactly what I would have done; he did exactly what he was trained to do by stopping that threat.”
Cargill added that his workers, the assistant manager and a sales clerk, were just enjoying themselves at the Austin establishment when they were mistaken for others in the parking lot.
Reportedly, the party that attacked the victims had been kicked out of the club for an incident inside. As they exited into the parking lot, they apparently mistook the two CTGW employees for others who were involved in the previous confrontation.
