Just because a dangerous situation is typical, it doesn’t mean that’s how encounters with criminals will always play out. Sometimes, these critical incidents pop up when least expected, which means it is always wise to be prepared.
This lesson was driven home to a Florida man in the middle of the afternoon on Monday.
Man returned home to find an unwelcome visitor waiting inside
The unidentified Jacksonville resident returned to his apartment near Jacksonville University at around 4 p.m. to find an unknown teenager inside. This is certainly not the time of day when people expect to be on high alert, but the man quickly responded.
Exactly how the encounter unfolded is unclear, but the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office received a call concerning a shooting. When officers arrived at the complex, they found the young man in his late teens suffering a shoulder wound.
He was transported to an area hospital with what were described as life-threatening injuries.
Situational awareness is important at any time of day or night
Jacksonville authorities are investigating, and the intended victim is cooperating. The man is fortunate today that he had a firearm ready and the instinct to respond quickly.
Volatile situations such as this serve as a stark reminder that situational awareness applies to all aspects of life.
It is expected that a person will be cognizant of risks while in an urban setting late at night. Returning to one’s own apartment in the middle of the afternoon should not be a risky endeavor, but that’s the world we live in.
Thankfully for the man who apparently defended himself, Florida generally respects the right to armed self-defense. While the Sunshine State has a ways to go to live up to its reputation for defending the Second Amendment, law-abiding citizens do enjoy broad latitude in protecting themselves.
