Conducting business at a gas station that bumps up against a tire shop should not be a dangerous affair, but in Memphis in 2026, all bets are off. Last Tuesday got off to a rough start with an exchange of gunfire and a wounded suspect.
Memphis Police were called to the Express Mart on reports of shots being fired and a party down after being struck.
Parking lot argument led to shots fired and a wounded suspect
Witnesses told investigators that a man and woman began arguing at the gas station, and apparently, the male fired shots toward the parking lot of the adjacent tire store. That alarmed an unidentified customer, who reportedly then fired rounds at the suspect.
The man who was struck fled the scene but was apprehended a short time later. He was transported to Regional One Hospital in West Tennessee where doctors listed him in critical condition.
Now authorities must sift through conflicting accounts.

One witness told officers that he saw the man and woman arguing outside of the business. He recalled the man shot one round into the air and then began firing at the tire store parking lot, where the armed customer apparently was watching the spectacle.
The man exited his vehicle and returned fire at the suspect, according to witness statements.
The suspect fled in a white Nissan but did not make it far. First responders found him wounded at a nearby intersection, and he was treated there before being transported to the ER.
The woman allegedly involved in the argument has a different account of the events. She said her boyfriend was simply pumping gas when he was approached by five men, one of whom said he was going to shoot him.
Memphis authorities are now left with the task of deciphering the details and establishing what actually happened. Security camera footage from the businesses where the encounter exploded will likely be the deciding factor.
