How atrocious are gun laws imposed on residents and visitors of the U.S. Virgin Islands?
Remember that the Caribbean territory is subject to U.S. law and the Constitution, and American citizens who travel to the USVI are considered domestic visitors.
According to Lee Williams, the award-winning investigative journalist who also serves as the Second Amendment Foundation’s (SAF) Investigative Journalism Project Chief Editor, the island paradise is anything but for firearm owners. It is hardly surprising that the reshaped Department of Justice (DOJ) sued the island’s gun control regime.
US territory flagrantly ignores Second Amendment
If an individual possesses or carries an unlicensed firearm, the lawsuit declared that this act “is an offense subjecting an individual to a term of imprisonment of not less than ten years, and/or a fine not less than $10,000 nor more than $15,000.”
Carry is heavily restricted, open carry is banned, and even a local must demonstrate to authorities that they have a “good reason” to fear for their lives.
DOJ suit accuses archipelago officials of serious infringement of gun rights
That’s ironic considering that the USVI consistently ranks near the absolute bottom in violent crime statistics worldwide. It is well known that law enforcement is on the take, and there are numerous extralegal murders attributed to the police department every year.
DOJ Assistant Attorney General for Civil Rights Harmeet Dhillon announced the sweeping suit targeting a wide array of USVI officials.
It directly accused authorities of initiating “unreasonable delays and conditions on lawful gun owners’ rights [that] create an unconstitutional permitting process in violation of the Second Amendment.”
The U.S. Attorney for the District of the U.S. Virgin Islands, Adam Sleeper, absolutely agreed with the lawsuit’s foundation.
“The territory’s firearms licensing laws and practices are inconsistent with the Second Amendment,” Sleeper wrote in response to the litigation. “This lawsuit seeks to uphold the rights of law-abiding citizens to bear arms in the U.S. Virgin Islands.”
