Government gun registries are illegal in nearly every case under federal law, as they are obviously giant steps toward the inevitable confiscation push.
That did not stop Jacksonville officials, however, from allegedly maintaining exactly that under the guise of tracking information on everyone who brought one into certain city buildings. Allegations emerged just over a year ago, and now Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier is bringing the hammer down on city officials.
Previous investigation determined registry was illegal but isolated
Uthmeier disputed the previous finding by the State Attorney’s Office that the city registry was indeed illegal, but that it was merely the result of a single person’s misjudgment.
The office called it a “breakdown in communication and oversight.”
“We are requesting judgment against the city of Jacksonville for $5 million as provided by law and any other relief the court deems appropriate,” Uthmeier announced. “The Second Amendment is not a second-class right, and we will use all power of this office to protect the rights of Floridians.”
City officials reissued a partisan response to the lawsuit
Investigators discovered two binders containing gun owners’ information, and the initial brush-off by state officials is history.
As for Jacksonville’s response, authorities merely reissued a previously released statement claiming that Mayor Donna Deegan’s office was unaware of actions by an apparently rogue employee. The writing cited the eight-month investigation that ruled in their favor, then turned the issue into a partisan one.
“As the state pursues politically motivated deflections that waste taxpayer dollars, the mayor remains focused on addressing affordability challenges for the people of Jacksonville,” the missive read. “It would be nice to have a state partner that is doing the same thing.”
The city’s accusers allege that authorization for the gun registry came from within the mayor’s office.
