A lawful gun owner in North Philadelphia received quite the shock Sunday afternoon. It was around 1:15 on what was likely an uneventful weekend day when the unexpected suddenly appeared.
It was at that point that the raw power of the Second Amendment came into immediate focus. The homeowner could have been a sitting duck for a violent criminal, but instead, they had a ready weapon and thus were able to confront the danger.
Suspect allegedly refused to stop before being shot
According to Philadelphia Police Department Inspector D. F. Pace, a female suspect attempted to enter the residence by trying to break through a back window. The two occupants and their dog were alerted to the ongoing intrusion, and one of them quickly retrieved the firearm.
The gun owner warned the unidentified woman to stop, but she continued. Pace told reporters that it was then that the occupant fired at the female suspect.
The injured woman was transported to Temple University Hospital, where she was pronounced dead. Authorities noted that the investigation is ongoing, but charges against the shooter appear unlikely.
It is doubtful that the home’s occupants will face charges
“There’s still some unanswered questions,” Pace said. “Once those questions are answered, the police, in conjunction with the district attorney’s office, will determine as to whether those folks will face any charges. But at this point, it does not appear that will be the case.”
Investigators canvassed the neighborhood for suspects and clues, and they noted that the two residents fully cooperated with authorities.
The loss of life is regrettable, and there were obviously better decisions that the deceased might have made. But the residents are not responsible for those mistakes, and if the investigation upholds initial reports, the two were well within their rights to resort to lethal force.
