To paraphrase a familiar saying, when seconds count, help is usually minutes away. Now, imagine how true this is for those who live in Alaska, amid vast swaths of remote territory that law enforcement is responsible for policing.
It was around 5 a.m. on Sunday when a Fairbanks resident pulled up to his home and received quite the shock. Two apparent strangers were allegedly busy attempting to steal copper wiring, fuel, and other items they had no business taking.
Then it got worse.
Apparent burglary in progress quickly became a gun battle
As the homeowner discovered that he was not alone, the two suspects reportedly opened fire at the new arrival. The Alaska man was also armed, and the pair quickly fled when he unleashed a hail of gunfire in their direction.
Alaska State Troopers rushed to the scene, but the frightening and potentially deadly encounter was long since over. The homeowner was not injured, and there were reportedly no indications that either of the suspects was struck.
Neither of the men was apprehended at last report.
Americans are blessed with the freedom to be their own first responders
Having to wait and pray for help to arrive is certainly not confined to those who reside in The Last Frontier, but their need to be their own first responders is undeniable. The intended victim rolled up on an apparent burglary in progress, and the suspects allegedly opened fire.
At that point, at least for a lawful gun owner, there is only one choice.
Had he been defenseless, the volley of bullets he faced Sunday morning likely would have led to a quite different outcome. He may have been able to hide or quickly escape in his vehicle, but those are big ifs that are anything but a sure thing.
Instead, thanks to the Second Amendment, another law-abiding citizen successfully defended life and property against those who respect neither.
