Gun rights opponents habitually label any bill with the slightest support from the other side of the aisle as “bipartisan,” so it is reasonable that Second Amendment supporters may do the same.
The U.S. House on Tuesday advanced the “Protecting Privacy in Purchases Act” to stop giant Wall Street financial firms from tracking firearm purchases through specific merchant category codes (MCC).
Five Democrats joined the majority in protecting the sporting community from this obvious invasion of their privacy. Thus, the bipartisan proposal moves on to the U.S. Senate.
National gun registry is the undeniable goal of anti-2A forces
Rep. Riley M. Moore (R-WV) sponsored the important legislation in response to anti-2A states passing laws mandating this tracking system.
In a statement after the victory, Moore blasted bad actors who seek to track law-abiding gun owners.
“The Second Amendment is not a second-class right. Americans should never have their lawful firearm purchases tracked by financial institutions or payment processors,” the congressman declared. “My bill stops this dangerous overreach, protects consumers’ financial privacy, and ensures that a backdoor federal gun registry can never be created through credit card transaction data.”
Three states now require such tracking of firearm purchases
Moore is on point about the risks posed by such nefarious actions. Of course, any sensible observer quickly realizes this is an onerous step toward an illegal federal firearm registry.
Four years ago, at the behest of gun grabbers, the International Standards Organization (ISO) created a firearm-specific MCC. Second Amendment supporters immediately recognized the threat, and at least 20 states banned such practices.
But not all.
For example, California, Colorado, and New York went in the opposite direction and mandated that payment processors single out weapons transactions.
Rep. Moore is correct. There’s no need to look any further than the abysmal gun rights track records of these outlier states. There is not the slightest possibility that any of them are concerned with protecting gun owners’ rights. None.
There’s no better way to show your patriotism than with merch that speaks before you do.
