That thing that anti-gunners tell the rest of us never happens is, in truth, about as predictable as the sunrise.
In a Phoenix apartment complex on Sunday, yet another good guy with a gun rescued two women who a crazed suspect allegedly stabbed. That individual is no longer with us, and the victims survived thanks to a quick response when the cavalry was elsewhere.
Neighbor sprang into action before officials could get to the scene
Specifics are sparse, but the Phoenix Police Department believes the 40-year-old suspect arrived uninvited just after midnight and attacked one woman with a cutting instrument before turning on her female relative who attempted to intervene.
That’s when the good neighbor likely saved the victims, aged 27 and 30, from even more harm. They are not out of the woods yet after being rushed to the hospital with what were described as severe and life-threatening wounds.
Still, it could have ended much worse. The only thing that stopped the alleged attacker was a neighbor being alerted to the nearby violence by screaming, and fortunately for the stabbing victims, he was prepared.
Readiness includes the ability to intercede for others
Police arrived to find the male suspect at the bottom of a stairwell. Phoenix Fire Department paramedics attempted life-saving measures on the scene, but he was pronounced dead there.
The names of the deceased, his alleged victims, and the rescuer have not been released.
Again, the hero was in his own residence in the dark of night and doing nothing to attract trouble. But trouble came anyway, and he was prepared to step up and defend innocent victims with whom he may well have no connection.
The Second Amendment’s power goes far beyond sporting activities and even emergency self-defense measures.
In this case and countless others, it empowers good people to be their own first responders. Or, as in the explosive weekend incident, the gun owner can protect others from injury or even death because that law-abiding citizen is honorable and courageous.
