Virginia’s leadership already suppresses Second Amendment activities as a matter of policy. On Tuesday, officials announced a specialized team within Attorney General Jay Jones’ office to take the oppression of gun rights to a new level by targeting firearms manufacturers and sellers.
Ironically titled The Firearms Accountability & Industry Responsibility Unit, or FAIR Unit, promises to be anything but.
Unit seeks ‘public safety’ through suing firearm makers and dealers out of existence
With nary a mention of violent criminals themselves, Jones left no doubt as to the purpose of this state government effort.
“Creating safer communities starts with holding dealers and manufacturers accountable when they are reckless with the lives of Virginians,” the anti-gun AG claimed. “The FAIR Unit will play an integral role in building lasting public safety in our communities.”
Earlier this year, the Virginia General Assembly passed a law it described as establishing standards for “responsible conduct” and “reasonable controls” for the Second Amendment industry. This action is merely a dog whistle indicating that firearm manufacturers and sellers are not welcome in the state.

What does it mean for boots on the ground?
The FAIR Unit is charged with investigating the Second Amendment industry in Old Dominion. It can bring civil suits against the industry for not being “responsible” or “reasonable” in the state’s eyes.
There is nothing new under the sun.
This kind of arbitrary, politically motivated lawfare is exactly why Congress passed, and the President signed, the Protection of Lawful Commerce in Arms (PLCAA) over two decades ago. Anti-gunners know that by driving the industry into the dirt, they no longer need to fight the Constitution directly.
Firearms that are unaffordable or not able to be manufactured are also “banned,” just with different terminology.
