The Massachusetts woman who may have saved her husband’s life after a social media dispute went horribly wrong will not face charges in the fatal shooting earlier this month.
The Hampden District Attorney’s Office on Tuesday confirmed that the Springfield resident was cleared. Investigators pored through mounds of evidence, including eyewitness accounts, doorbell cameras, text messages, and social media posts, and determined she was within her rights to defend her family.
War of words suddenly transformed into an alleged violent attack
Investigators concluded that 35-year-old Robert Murchison of Springfield, who was known by the couple, arrived at the couple’s home furious over an online dispute. The DA’s office found that the suspect physically assaulted the husband before brandishing a firearm.
That proved to be a fatal mistake.
The wife, who is a licensed gun owner, produced a weapon and fired one round at Murchison. Despite the confusion and adrenaline that often surrounds such an explosive encounter, she ended the threat with a single shot.
Couple had to wait to learn if the wife would face charges
Massachusetts is hardly Texas or Florida, and the possibility of being targeted by an overzealous prosecutor is always present.
This time, however, the facts overwhelmingly supported the couple’s narrative. They called 911 immediately after the shooting and cooperated with investigators, and the case is now closed.
Online arguments rarely result in such extreme confrontations, but they are certainly possible in today’s society. People express thoughts and even make threats that they are unlikely to duplicate when face-to-face with the other person.
Then there’s this case. The Massachusetts wife should be commended for her preparation and subsequent reaction to the volatile situation.
Without the lawful firearm readily available, the aftermath may have been far different than what authorities found when they arrived at the home. Yet another example of the Second Amendment’s undeniable role in defending against criminal violence.
