Entrenched bureaucrats and the political hacks who enable them howl in protest when meaningful reforms have a real shot at succeeding. They know that their work is substandard–and that’s putting it mildly–but these “public servants” simply do not care.
With genuine progress underway at the long-embattled Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), it is noteworthy when a 2028 presidential aspirant blasts actual change.
California Governor Gavin Newsom (D) left no doubt last week about where he stands on ATF improvements.
Eliminating impediments to 2A rights is ‘dangerous’ to Newsom
Rolling out all the usual buzzwords, Newsom charged in a release that enhancing the right to keep and bear arms is a “giveaway to gun traffickers, a threat to law enforcement, and a dangerous move away from common sense practices that protect children.”
Did he miss any anti-Second Amendment tropes?
“It calls child safety warnings an ‘undue burden’ on firearms dealers,” Newsom claimed. “And it is orchestrating a purge [of] records that would help law enforcement solve crimes. We’ve seen politicians in the pocket of the gun lobby here.”
Newsom wants California-style gun control enforced nationwide
The governor, who previously said he wants to export California’s notoriously oppressive gun control regime nationwide, criticized the proposal to once again permit lawfully purchased weapons to be shipped to the buyer’s door.
This, in his words, would “make buying a gun online easier than buying alcohol.” If you’re going to lie, go big.
These prospective gun owners would still be required to undergo the same criminal background check as they would when standing in a gun shop. And alcohol consumption is hardly a constitutionally guaranteed liberty, as opposed to the right to keep and bear arms.
Newsom is merely pandering to his base and testing the 2028 presidential waters. It’s early enough for him to pivot if there’s enough blowback from the electorate.
Still, he is on the record once again, undeniably taking a stand against law-abiding citizens’ fundamental freedoms.
