The Sunday before Independence Day proved costly for a suspect in a Texas machete attack on a woman he allegedly dragged down a Fort Worth Street. Unfortunately for him, he encountered a good guy with a gun.
One of those things they tell us never happens just happened again, and a courageous neighbor’s intervention may have saved an innocent life.
Attacker with machete stopped by an armed neighbor
According to reports, a usually quiet neighborhood exploded with violence at around 10:20 p.m. Fort Worth Police Department officers received a call concerning a domestic violence situation that quickly spiraled out of control.
Investigators believe the conflict moved onto the street where the suspect, armed with a machete, dragged a woman whose screams alerted several neighbors. Some of the obviously shocked residents called 911, but one man heard the victim’s cries for help and raced into the nightmare situation.
The neighbor loudly commanded the machete-wielding suspect to let go of the woman, and he did. At that point, the disturbing confrontation should have ended, but witnesses told investigators that the man charged the Good Samaritan.
Armed defender released after questioning, awaits DA probe
That act proved to be a fatal mistake, The surprise defender was armed and shot the alleged attacker in his tracks.
Law enforcement officers arrived to find the suspect suffering from critical wounds. Responders provided treatment until an ambulance transported him to a hospital, where he succumbed to his wounds a short time later.
There was no word on the extent of injuries suffered by the victim. She survived, and it’s due to an armed man’s willingness to put himself in danger to aid another citizen.
Any such incident, even in Texas, prompts authorities to conduct an immediate and thorough investigation. FWPD officials questioned witnesses and determined that the deadly confrontation unfolded as it appeared.
The heroic resident cooperated with officials, who soon released him without criminal charges. The Tarrant County District Attorney’s Office will review the circumstances and determine if it was a justifiable shooting.
By all indications, it was yet another instance of a brave individual with a firearm stepping up and doing what absolutely had to be done.
