A normally peaceful Texas community that had not recorded a homicide in 13 years is reeling today after an apparent weekend rampage that saw a child get stabbed and the suspect fatally shot.
Like violent incidents in quiet communities, another good citizen stands up for their neighbors and wields a ready firearm in defense of the innocent in yet another one of those things that “never” happens.
Suspect believed to randomly target home where he was mortally wounded
This time it was in Lytle, where authorities were called to reports of a disturbance at around 10:30 p.m. Sunday. They arrived to find a child suffering from apparent knife wounds, and while investigating, they heard gunshots from a nearby home.
Lytle Police Department officers went to find the source, and a neighbor just a couple of houses down the street came out and reported that he had shot a man who barged into his home.
In a statement, LPD officials noted the seemingly random nature of the violence. “The suspect from the initial disturbance, who appeared aggressive and out of control according to witnesses, fled the residence and entered another residence just a couple of houses away. He had no connection to that residence; it appears to have been selected at random.”

The press release added that the intended victim was cornered in his home when he “used a firearm to protect his life and the life of his family.”
The little girl who was initially stabbed was treated at a hospital and is expected to make a full recovery. Not so for the suspect, who succumbed to his injuries after allegedly forcing the homeowner to act.
Authorities are investigating the shooting as a possible self-defense case, and that, on the surface, certainly appears accurate. Anyone disturbed enough to harm a child would not have a second thought about hurting adult strangers.
Small, quiet communities unfortunately are not immune to the same violent crime that plagues larger urban areas. The adage: “It’s better to have it and not need it than need it and not have it” applies to lawful firearms, as a formerly peaceful neighborhood learned over the weekend.
