The Biblical story of a foreigner who stepped up to help someone when he could just as easily have kept walking still resonates 2,000 years later. It is always heartwarming to learn of someone who put themselves in harm’s way to protect another.

It was Wednesday afternoon in Brentwood, Tennessee, and a horrific situation unfolded in what was likely a quiet neighborhood up until that point.

A frightening assault erupted when a male suspect allegedly began stabbing a female. Alerted to the violent attack, a good neighbor ran to the scene and attempted to intervene physically, but the unthinkable act continued with several witnesses present.

The unidentified neighbor was armed, and seeing no alternative, shot the suspect several times.

The alleged attacker, later identified as 26-year-old Julian Porter, died while being treated at Vanderbilt University Medical Center.

The female victim, who was also transported to the hospital, is expected to recover from her knife wounds. Her relationship with the alleged attacker is unclear.

Meanwhile, a neighbor told local media that everyone is concerned for the victim and her family. “Of course, we feel terrible for them, it’s awful.”

The man added, however, that he still feels safe in the area he’s lived in for approximately seven years. “It’s not like a crazy person was going around here like indiscriminately attacking people. I don’t feel any different today than yesterday.”

While the heroic neighbor who intervened and likely saved the woman’s life was not a passing stranger, there are striking similarities with their action and the historic account of the Good Samaritan. Other people witnessed the attack and would or could not stop it.

It took one armed person to step up and possibly save the victim’s life. In 2025, there are an increasing number of powerful incidents when a good guy with a gun comes to the rescue.
