A tragic and apparently random shooting on Saturday at an In-N-Out Burger restaurant in Twin Falls, Idaho, might have been far worse without a good guy reportedly firing rounds from a suppressed handgun at the suspect.
Three people died in the attack, though it is unclear whether the shooter was among that number. Police confirmed that the alleged gunman, who reportedly fired “aimlessly” at random targets, is also deceased.
Drive-thru customer stepped up and drew suspect’s fire
Lane Koehn told KTVB that he saw a man in the drive-thru wield a handgun and shoot at the alleged attacker.
The witness to the terrifying confrontation declared that the armed citizen “might have saved lives because he distracted the shooter enough to get him to stop firing into traffic.”
“And the last I saw the kid, he was hiding behind the In-N-Out sign…and he’s exchanging gunfire with this, this other person with his handgun in the drive-thru,” Koehn recalled. “They were both running around trying to dodge bullets.”
Initial reports indicated good guy had firearm training
USA Carry cited reports that the good guy with a gun was identified as Jordan Salinas, and that there were indications that he had weapons training. It is also unclear whether the suspect was killed by rounds from the bystander or responding officers.
Along with the three fatalities, two other victims were wounded and transported to a local hospital for treatment. Investigators have video footage of the explosive incident and asked for the public’s help in submitting other evidence from the scene.
With no fault of their own, most people would flee or at least hit the ground when gunshots ring out. After all, that’s their only serious option.
But in this Idaho tragedy and too many other modern incidents, the initial first responder is not a trained professional. Instead, lives hinge on a law-abiding citizen being prepared and having the courage to put themselves in harm’s way to protect the innocent.
