North Carolina has been the setting for several recent adventures involving a good guy with a gun. These are everywhere, though many in the mainstream media choose not to publicize them.

There are an incredible number of documented incidents in which an armed citizen comes to the rescue.

This latest heartwarming example developed in Lee County when a man on Friday fled from narcotics officers executing a search warrant.

The suspect, identified as 30-year-old Phillip Fortune, chose the absolute wrong dwelling in which to hide from pursuing law enforcement. Instead of an abandoned structure or one where the occupants were away, he allegedly fled straight into the arms of an armed homeowner.

The sheer randomness of violent encounters is underscored in this frightening incident. There was no acquaintance between the suspect and the person whose home he invaded, and no existing plan to rob the resident or otherwise do harm.

Instead, it was mere chance.

But the Sanford homeowner was no fool. He had a readily available weapon and quickly took action to protect himself

When the handy gun was produced, the suspect panicked and fled the home. This action was in vain as he was quickly taken into custody by agents who were searching for him.

Fortune was arrested and charged with a laundry list of infractions. He was issued a $101,000 secured bond.

As demonstrated yet again, there is no substitute for being prepared and possessing the courage to act in self-defense. The Second Amendment exists for exactly that purpose, to ensure that law-abiding Americans are able to live their day-to-day lives and can ward off violent criminals who would do them harm.

The latest example out of North Carolina is further proof of the wisdom of being armed and ready at all times. Because it can be when least expected that the need to protect yourself arises.
