An 11-year-old boy in Charlotte found himself in a situation last Wednesday that no child should encounter. But he handled it with a combination of bravery and skill to protect his pregnant mother from an alleged intruder.

The violent encounter unfolded at the InTown Suites late at night as the boy and his mother were inside the room. According to local media reports, the suspect was familiar with the family and involved in what was characterized as a domestic violence situation.

The person reportedly forced their way into the hotel room and attacked the pregnant woman. She ultimately was transported to the hospital for treatment of bruises and scratches.

But it was her son who became her first responder. He summoned the courage to grab a pistol and defend his mother from being hurt more. The boy fired a shot at the intruder, ending the attack and saving the person most precious to him.

The suspect was also taken to the hospital for treatment of undisclosed injuries. Pending charges include assault by strangulation, assault on an unborn child and false imprisonment.

Officials quickly announced that the 11-year-old hero will not face legal consequences for his quick thinking and acting. After all, he did what any good son with enough courage would do — stepped up and protected his mother.

There are certainly lessons to be learned from this terrifying incident, including the importance of teaching children about gun safety and proper handling of weapons. Though details are sketchy, it is likely the brave young man at some point received responsible training in handling the firearm.

When guns are in the home or, in this case, the hotel room, it is vitally important that children are taught the dangers fraught with misuse of a weapon.

At the same time, they learn proper usage. And as proven in a North Carolina hotel room last week, this may be the difference between life and death.
