A startling case in which an armed man was shot in Virginia is being defended by a construction company as self-defense. The flooring company supports its worker who ended up shooting the person during the installation of a hardwood floor at a Virginia Beach condo complex.

Employees of The Floor Doctor were working in the complex on Oct. 13 when someone living downstairs began griping about the noise. It was 8:30 a.m., well within the legal time for construction work.

But the woman living below the project did not like it.

She reportedly called the police to complain about the work. The proprietor of The Floor Doctor wished not to be identified but said officers understood that the workers were legally doing their jobs. He spoke at length to WAVY.

“When the police got there, they told the lady they were not going to stop them from working because ‘it’s not 6 a.m., it’s not 8 p.m. They’re here making an honest living, we’re going to let them continue to work.”

The situation only escalated when the police left the scene.

The owner reported the woman approached the workers and said, “Don’t worry, I’m calling somebody else.”

That somebody showed up about an hour later and allegedly attacked one of the construction workers. When another worker came to the victim’s defense, the suspect reportedly produced a weapon.

A melee ensued as the crew attempted to wrestle the alleged attacker to the ground. One of the workers produced his own weapon and repeatedly warned the aggressor to drop his weapon. When the suspect refused, the owner reported that a shot was fired.

Everyone remained at the scene, and local media said no charges have been filed.

The company owners placed much of the blame on the upset woman who called the man to the location. “If the lady never would have called for them to come out, none of this would have ever happened, and I truly believe charges should be filed on her.”

The injured man is reportedly still hospitalized.

Construction work will make noise, and a simple situation escalated violently when the women living downstairs called for someone else to get involved. It is commendable that the company stood up for the employee who defended his colleagues, and it is highly unlikely the police investigation will lead to charges against him.
