The Department of Justice (DOJ) is busy suing states over Second Amendment rights, and the official leading the charge said that the federal effort is without precedent.
Assistant Attorney General for the Civil Rights Division Harmeet Dhillon spoke to Fox News Digital about the push to protect the right to keep and bear arms.
She cited over a dozen lawsuits against state and local governments that blatantly infringe on constitutional freedoms. Just last week, her division sued California and Virginia over their oppressive gun control regimes that include blanket bans on semi-automatic rifles.
Dhillon explained the new approach to securing gun rights
“Since we started the Second Amendment section last year and even before that, we filed over a dozen lawsuits challenging different restrictions in different jurisdictions,” Dhillon explained. “This is a really historic amount of activity from the Department of Justice to protect the Second Amendment. It’s never been done before.”
There certainly have been other administrations that supported gun rights, but deploying the Civil Rights Division against overzealous laws against firearms is a new and novel approach.
DOJ officials intentionally avoid going to battle against every anti-2A law
The DOJ’s goal is not to simply play whack-a-mole against every infraction. While this approach could result in short-term victories, there’s a much more powerful strategy for future generations.
For a lasting legacy, legal precedents must be established to defend against future White House occupants with far different views on the Second Amendment.
Dhillon addressed the pressure from gun rights supporters for her division to go to battle against all state and local infringements.
“There are a lot of people out there in the Second Amendment community who would like us to challenge every restriction on guns,” the Assistant AG noted. “That’s really not our approach. We have an approach that tries to make the law for the land and that’s got some appellate strategy in it.”
