Gun Rights Groups Sue Colorado and Denver Officials Over Arbitrary Bans

Colorado and Denver officials already face a U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) challenge to their anti-Second Amendment laws.

Denver prohibits so-called “assault weapons” while the state bans standard-capacity gun magazines.

Two gun rights groups, the Firearms Policy Coalition (FPC) and the Colorado State Shooting Association (CSSA), sued both government entities almost simultaneously with last week’s U.S. Supreme Court decision to hear arguments in two “assault weapons” prohibition lawsuits this fall.

Without question, these and similarly controversial laws promulgated by rogue states are under fierce attack—as they should have been all along.

The complaint, which amps up legal pressure already on Denver and Colorado’s gun control apparatus, challenges how officials categorize enormously popular firearms owned by tens of millions of Americans.

“Denver has adopted a flat prohibition on carrying, storing, keeping, manufacturing, selling, or otherwise possessing many common firearms, tendentiously labeled ‘assault weapons,’ making it a crime for law-abiding citizens to exercise their fundamental right to keep and bear such arms,” the filing charged.

The plaintiffs in Elliott v. Denver likewise denounced the Colorado magazine ban.

FPC President Brandon Combs did not mince words in describing how government officials in the Centennial State infringe on the right to keep and bear arms.

“We filed this lawsuit to end Denver and Colorado’s war on gun owners and force these tyrants to respect the Second Amendment, whether they like it or not,” Combs declared. “This case is another critical step in our nationwide campaign to eliminate tyrannical bans on constitutionally protected firearms and magazines.”

CSSA Vice President Kolby Zipperer concurred. “Denver’s ‘assault weapons’ ban and Colorado’s magazine restrictions don’t make anyone safer—they just turn law-abiding citizens into criminals for owning some of the most common firearms and components in America.”
