Imagine visiting neighbors during a perfectly normal night and suddenly hearing gunfire and screams coming from your home. Your teenage daughter is inside, as is your wife, who just walked in to charge her phone.
What would you do?
A California man demonstrated for everyone the power of having legal firearms in your residence and the wherewithal to wield them. The Riverside County resident responded to the terrifying chaos in a manner that should serve as an example to all.
Homeowner did not hesitate to race into obvious danger
The unidentified man ran into his home to find a stranger wielding a shotgun. The intruder fired at the homeowner multiple times, but the hero father had amazingly secured a ready weapon, and he fired back.
That was the end of the terrifying attack.
The suspect, identified by the Riverside County Sheriffs’ Office as 45-year-old Ismael Martinez of San Jacinto, died from his wounds. Investigators later learned that he had allegedly stabbed his 52-year-old girlfriend with a knife earlier. She survived and is listed in stable condition.
Self-defense shooting was a cautionary tale on the importance of being ready
The explosion of violence was apparently random, as authorities believe there is no link between the deceased suspect and the family he allegedly targeted. A neighbor celebrated the father’s valiant effort to protect his daughter.
“His goal was to get his daughter out safely, regardless of what happened to him,” Robert Dorman told local media. “I’m shattered for them because they’re good people.”
Dorman added that the wife first encountered the suspect, who then allegedly started shooting at her as she ran away.
Even in California, this should be open and shut. The only troubling aspect is reports that the suspect armed himself with weapons he found in the dwelling. It should not be that easy.
