A man died early Wednesday morning in Houston, apparently as the result of an ill-advised robbery attempt at another’s home.
According to investigators, a masked and gloved stranger broke into the intended victim’s residence at around 5:45 a.m. Responding officers from the Harris County Sheriff’s Office arrived on the scene and quickly began piecing together the terrifying series of events.
It was not long before they located their suspect, dead from an apparent gunshot wound on a walking trail near the home.

The homeowner told authorities that he was asleep at that early hour when he awakened to discover the hooded intruder. He sprang into action and fought the suspect, and the fight quickly moved out into the backyard.
The alleged intruder left the scene for a short time, and the homeowner went back into his residence. He obviously retrieved a weapon and was ready when the violent stranger returned—which he soon did.
At that point, the homeowner fired at least one shot at the suspect. The masked man fled only to be found dead a short distance from the shooting scene.

There were two children, ages 12 and 13, and two other adults in the home when the surprise attack exploded.
No arrests have been made, and the Harris County District Attorney’s Office will make that ultimate determination. Investigators began working to learn why the suspect left and then returned, and if there was anything that happened prior to the fatality that may have ignited the confrontation.
Under Texas law, the homeowner appears to have had every right to resort to deadly force to defend himself and his family.
There will certainly be issues going forward for the defender, who never expected to be wedged into a position to take a human life. However, without the discovery of evidence that was not readily apparent, he is likely to walk away from the encounter without another fight for his existence.
