Many believe there is currently a mental health crisis in the U.S., and indeed, there appears to be a surge in cases of violent and unpredictable behavior.
An Indiana man faced such a threat early Friday morning and was apparently forced to use his Second Amendment rights to defend his young family.
According to Henry County authorities, a suspect later identified as Preston Kendall attempted to break into a home through a window at about 1:45 a.m. The unquestionably startled homeowner had his wife and three-year-old child in the residence, and he quickly retrieved a .45 caliber handgun for protection.
The Henry County Sheriff’s Department released a statement describing the frightening encounter. “[Kendall] allegedly busted out a window and attempted to crawl into the residence but was met with the barrel of a gun.”
Kendall was shot in the face and airlifted to an Indianapolis hospital, where he underwent emergency surgery. At last report, he was listed in critical but stable condition.
Officials confirmed that the suspect had a staggering 135 previous interactions with law enforcement, mostly concerning mental health problems.
Henry County Sheriff John Sproles voiced the suspicion that Friday’s almost-lethal encounter was another mental health-spurred issue. He told local media that his department had recently trained for such events, which appear to be becoming more common every day.
“This incident highlights the dire crisis we are facing with inadequate resources to house people with mental illness,” Sproles said. His department “just completed an all-week crisis intervention training here with approximately 20 law enforcement officers from our county.”
No matter the suspect’s intentions or the causes of his alleged actions, the young husband and father appears to have had no choice but to defend his family.
There is little chance without strong new evidence that he will face legal trouble for protecting those closest to him.
