A convenience store next to Elvis Presley’s fame Graceland was the site of what can only be described as a bizarre robbery attempt early Tuesday morning.

The suspect allegedly tried to rob the location three times — during the last he brandished a five-foot snake as a weapon.

Police charged 26-year-old Reginald Cook with two counts of attempted aggravated robbery of the Shell station on Elvis Presley Boulevard. The suspect initially entered the business at around 2 a.m., and he indicated that he had a weapon but did not show one.

Police reported that Cook returned shortly and demanded money while rummaging through his clothing with his hand, clearly implying that he was drawing a firearm.

The employee rebuffed his second robbery attempt and Cook left again without money.

But at around 3:05 a.m., Cook reappeared with an accomplice — a five-foot snake wrapped around his neck. He reportedly shouted and demanded money yet again while reaching inside his backpack.

This instance took a sharply different direction when the obviously frustrated clerk produced a real firearm and held Cook at bay. Police arrived shortly and arrested the suspect.

Reports do not indicate the origin of the snake or its fate after the attempted robbery. These are just two of several questions surrounding this unusual incident that unfolded in the shadow of Graceland.

The clerk showed remarkable patience in waiting until the third attempt to produce his weapon. Perhaps the presence of the snake along with the persistent suspect’s shouting convinced him that the encounter was now more serious.

Likely it was the presence of the five-foot snake.

Either way, the convenience store clerk obviously made the right choice in the face of an escalating threat situation. It is also certain that there should be a mental health evaluation soon for the suspect.
