It was about 4:45 a.m. when what was apparently an attempted robbery in the Newport Coast neighborhood unfolded. Investigators believe at least one of the two suspects knew the family and targeted them for the attack.
A frantic call from within the gated community brought law enforcement to the location. The Orange County Sheriff’s Department SWAT team was also called in.
When police arrived they found one of the suspects down in the street suffering a gunshot wound. He survived being shot and was taken to a local hospital.
The second home invasion suspect was found dead in nearby bushes. In a bizarre twist, authorities concluded that he died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
It is unclear whether he was shot by the resident defending his home before apparently taking his own life.
None of the four people in the home were injured in the shocking incident. Police assured the local community that it was an isolated event and that “there is a relationship between the two suspects and the victims/the residents.”
This may explain how the suspects were able to enter the gated community, which features multi-million-dollar homes and a guard at the entrance.
Proving once again that the need for armed self-defense can arise anywhere at any time, a neighbor noted the unusual nature of the event. Brad Morrison, 54, told reporters, “The home invasion, the shooting, the helicopter search, it’s not something we see in this area. We’re used to car break-ins, and we do see some burglaries, but nothing like this.”
