Following California’s lead on fighting violent crime and gun control is a risky proposition, as the Golden State has perhaps the worst track record on both in the nation. Maryland lawmakers ignored all warning signs and pushed through a handgun ban certain to face a powerful legal challenge.
On Tuesday, Gov. Wes Moore (D) signed the state’s prohibition on the sale of Glock weapons into law. This move increased the roster of states with such indefensible laws to two, and don’t be surprised if more do the same.
The ink wasn’t dry before the NRA stepped in with a legal challenge
The National Rifle Association (NRA) wasted no time in its preparation to challenge the law. NRA-ILA Executive Director John Commerford put Maryland and Moore on notice that a brutal legal fight lies ahead.
“With a single stroke of his pen, Gov. Wes Moore has banned one of the most popular handguns in America,” Commerford declared. “Instead of going after criminals and enforcing existing laws, he has chosen to disarm law-abiding Marylanders and strip them of their constitutional rights.”
Similar fights may be coming in other anti-2A states
The 2A advocate then announced what lies ahead.
“The NRA is filing an immediate legal challenge to this unconstitutional assault on the Second Amendment and will exhaust every option available to ensure this law is struck down,” Commerford warned.
The new law (SB 334) takes effect on October 1, and the full prohibition on the purchase, sale, or transfer of Glock and Glock-type clones takes effect on January 1, 2027.
Gun rights organizations are already fighting California’s ban with a federal lawsuit, and Connecticut is mulling over a similar law. Anti-gunners single out the Glock due to criminals using illegal “Glock switches” to convert the handguns to automatic function.
Again, already illegal.
But Maryland lawmakers decided that such “convertible” handguns must be taken off the market. This is nothing more than chipping away at Second Amendment rights, and the law deserves to be struck down.
