A brazenly unconstitutional proposal picked up steam last week in Delaware when the Senate approved SB 300. The bill advances to the House for further review and undoubtedly more controversy.
Senate President Pro-Tempore David Sokola (D) claimed in an online announcement that “gun violence” and “gun trafficking” will decrease by requiring shops to purchase and install top-level security systems and other cost-prohibitive features.
Corporate chains will pass the cost on to consumers, but that’s not much of an option for mom-and-pop operations running on razor-thin profit margins.
Small operations are the clear target of SB 300
Ron Hagan owns Best Shot, a gun business in Lewes, and he said the bill’s target is truly misguided. After all, it’s the illegal sellers who supply weapons to violent criminals who certainly do not go through the legal process to obtain a firearm.
“They’re putting all this onus on the gun stores when we’re not the problem,” Hagan said. “We’ll essentially be losing money in order to operate a business to sell guns.”
Delaware NRA affiliate declared “Nobody steals from a gun shop’
Hagan added that he and other Delaware FFLs are now organizing to fight this onerous proposal. That is a wise move as Sokola admitted that the licensing fees paid by law-abiding citizens will not cover the high cost of implementing the mandate.
When the bill was announced last week, Everytown for Gun Safety’s Marianna Mitchem piped in with what she apparently thought was a convincing example of why small gun shops should be crushed.
The example cited one rogue dealer in 2020. Six years ago. Yet there is another gun control solution searching for a problem to address.
Anti-gunners lack the wherewithal to go after the actual culprits of violent crime; that’s not their agenda. Instead, they bring the hammer down on upstanding citizens who pay their taxes and engage in a constitutionally protected enterprise.
