A Florida neighborhood is on edge after the fatal shooting of a man “believed to be an intruder” early Monday. Miami Police Spokeswoman Kenia Fallat said an armed resident shot and killed the suspect at around 5 a.m.
The deceased suspect was only described as a man in his 40s. He succumbed to his gunshot wound and was pronounced “dead at the scene.”
Resident being questioned but does not yet face charges
Details are initially sparse, but Miami Police confirmed they are questioning a person in relation to the shooting. Fallat did not yet know if the resident was a homeowner or tenant.
Either way, if the facts hold, this is yet another example of how the right to keep and bear arms keeps violent criminals from preying on the innocent. A 5 a.m. intruder is never up to any good and must be treated as a clear and present danger.
Neighbors uneasy after latest outburst of violence
Unfortunately, the area has seen its share of property crimes recently, and multiple neighbors said no one was caught off guard by the apparent burglary attempt. This may be the reason the resident was able to respond with lethal force at such an early hour.
One neighbor, Jake Schuster, told CBS News that the break-in is unsettling but not a shock.
“It’s not surprising, unfortunately,” he said. “And it’s disappointing because I travel a lot for work. And I always hope that my wife can feel safe walking our dogs when I’m away. But I guess we’ll have to take a different route now.”
Judy Winter told reporters she has called the neighborhood home for the past decade and is frightened by what she learned Monday morning.
“I think this is a very scary situation,” Winter said. “A home invasion. Imagine if that is what happened. I am very upset, as anybody who hears this story and knows what happened will probably want to secure their homes a little more tonight.”
Exactly. And for many upstanding citizens, self-defense includes a legal firearm that may be the ultimate difference between life and death.
