Oregon Voters May Decide to Ban Hunting and Fishing

Some radical Oregon activists want to place an initiative on this November’s ballot that would effectively prohibit hunting and fishing in the state.

The People for the Elimination of Animal Cruelty Exemptions (PEACE) Act would expand laws that now protect dogs and cats to cover livestock, wild animals, and those used in research.

Organizers do not believe they have enough support to pass their initiative—yet

David Michelson is spearheading this onerous effort.

“We really want to make Oregon the first state to vote on something like this,” he declared. “We are aware that it’s unlikely 50% of Oregonians are ready right now to move away from killing animals. But we want to get the conversation out there so that we can hopefully move in that direction.”

Even in Oregon, which has a fine sporting tradition but is burdened with too many anti-gun lawmakers, it is difficult to see the public outlawing centuries of sporting tradition.

Proposal to ban hunting and fishing is gathering momentum toward November

Amy Patrick is with the Oregon Hunters Association. She noted that the proposal is neither shocking nor new.

“This is something that has been around for the last five years…this is an initiative that is trying to basically outlaw the ability to kill or injure an animal for any reason other than self-defense. They want to make Oregon a sanctuary state.”

Patrick added that if proponents get their way, the PEACE Act would “criminalize hunting, fishing, trapping, wildlife management practices, education and teaching with animals, all the way down to your ability to trap pests and vermin.”

As far-fetched as Initiative Petition 28 seems, it is close to garnering enough signatures to appear as a ballot measure in November. Of the required 117,173, organizers say they now have 105,000.

Supporters compare the present drive to ban hunting and fishing to the fight for women’s suffrage in the early 20th century.
