It is a sorry state of affairs when licensed and armed security guards are necessary at a preschool, but that’s where we are. Nothing can be gained by burying one’s head in the sand and wishing for more peaceful times.
A frightening incident in Oregon earlier this month drove this point home with great emphasis.
Security guard at preschool forced to defend himself in alleged attack
The guard was working at the Gan Portland Jewish Preschool on May 8 when he encountered an attacker. The confrontation unfolded in the parking lot between the educational facility and a clinic.
It was just before noon when a man reportedly came up to the guard in a threatening manner. This forced the security person to draw their weapon and fire at least one shot.
The alleged attacker went down, and the authorities were called. Meanwhile, personnel from the clinic rushed out and performed life-saving measures on the wounded man, who was described as suffering a gunshot to the chest.
Antisemitism is not believed to have been the motivation for this encounter.
School deployed armed security to defend against antisemitism
The school released a statement describing the terrifying scene. “During this interaction, the individual presented a direct threat to the guard. In response, the guard was forced to take protective action, using his licensed weapon to defend himself.”
The unidentified suspect was transported to a hospital for treatment of his injuries, and none were reported by the security officer or anyone in the school or clinic.
School officials noted that having armed security at the preschool was in response to the recent spike in antisemitic violence. This practice has become common in synagogues and other Jewish facilities, and for good reason.
Just this week, two Israeli Embassy staff members were shot and killed by a suspected terrorist outside the Capital Jewish Museum in Washington, D.C.
In these instances, there is no substitute for a good guy with a gun.
