National reciprocity is a cause whose time has come.
There are far too many instances where a law-abiding gun owner is well within the law in one state or jurisdiction but risks losing their freedom for the identical act in another. This is not how fundamental constitutional rights should be protected.
Another warning shot came from the top federal prosecutor for Washington, D.C., on Monday. U.S. Attorney Jeanine Pirro told Fox News that she wants to eradicate the Second Amendment in the nation’s capital.
Despite prosecutor’s ill-advised comments, 2A rights are still valid in D.C.
Pirro’s intention was abundantly clear.
She told the outlet, “You bring a gun into the District, you mark my words, you’re going to jail. I don’t care if you have a license in another district, and I don’t care if you’re a law-abiding gun owner somewhere else. You bring a gun into this District, count on going to jail, and hope you get the gun back.”
It did not take long for gun rights advocates to fire a volley back at the District’s top prosecutor.
Pirro’s words do not align with recent DOJ actions
The Cato Institute’s Matthew Cavendon noted the stark inconsistency between Pirro’s wild statement and recent Department of Justice (DOJ) actions. The new and improved DOJ sued cities that are infringing on gun rights and argued before the U.S. Supreme Court that citizens generally have the freedom to bear arms in public.
But now comes Pirro and her new take on the Second Amendment. Cavendon cautioned that she should check with higher-ups before making such an unhinged proclamation again.
“Pirro should have run her position by her colleagues at the Department of Justice,” he wrote.
Gun Owners of America (GOA) also took issue with the prosecutor’s words. “Shall not be infringed. Unless you cross into D.C.?” GOA posted. “Why are non-violent, law-abiding permit holders being treated like criminals?”
