Home security for the rank and file used to be a shotgun and a German Shepherd. Times have changed, and while these two choices remain good ones, modern technology has advanced enough to give Americans an incredible number of options for protecting their families.
Doorbell cameras are now ubiquitous and useful for everything from checking whether a package was dropped off to watching for prowlers.
For one Texas resident, having a Ring doorbell camera attached to their Hopkins County home may have been the difference between life and death on Tuesday.
Suspect allegedly made loud noises and broke out the front door glass
The unidentified intended victim was probably having a normal day when they were alerted to a stranger’s presence in front of their house. The homeowner watched the suspect, later identified as Buck Clary, punch and break through the glass door.
Investigators determined that Clary was screaming when he reached through the now vacant glass to gain entry. The homeowner, using the Ring camera to determine exactly where the threat was coming from, fired a shot through the front door.
That was all it took.

Clary was transported to a local hospital, where he was later pronounced dead, according to the Hopkins County Sheriff’s Office. Deputies watched the doorbell camera footage, and by all indications, it backed up the homeowner’s frightening story.
The resident had a ready weapon and a handy security feature that let them see outside without putting themselves in the line of fire. They could determine the suspect’s exact position and, instead of indiscriminate firing, they neutralized the threat quickly.
The firearm remains the centerpiece of a good home security plan, but it is wise to have other equipment in place to be instantly alerted when trouble arrives.
