Ruger was founded in Connecticut all the way back in 1949. And while it maintains a small staff in its bare Southport office, the operation now calls Mayodan, North Carolina, home.
Unlike some of its predecessors, the company quietly moved South on January 1 with no official announcement and no fanfare.

States such as Connecticut do not try to hide their open disdain for the industry, as if a constitutionally protected individual right is something to be ashamed of. A company’s history is important, but if local and state leaders are hostile to your business, it may be time to relocate.

In October 2023, Smith & Wesson made the same decision for its historic business. Established in 1852 in Connecticut before moving to Springfield, Massachusetts soon after, the company was part of the proud New England social fabric.
Right up until it wasn’t.
Now based in Springfield, Tennessee, Smith & Wesson escaped from its former home, which had turned its back on the industry in recent years. Far from its proud heritage of leading the nation out of being merely a colony, Massachusetts leaders aggressively fought the weapons industry until their only choice was obvious.
Businesses also vote with their feet, and if a political climate makes a successful venture impossible, relocating to a Second Amendment-friendly region is the wise choice.
