President Donald Trump (R) surprised the Second Amendment community on Tuesday by announcing to a Pennsylvania audience that the White House is “working” on legislation to expand constitutional carry rights from sea to shining sea.
There are currently 29 states that recognize permitless carry, but that leaves far too many Americans still needing government permission to carry arms outside of the home.
Then there’s the reality of losing gun rights just by crossing a state line.
Constitutional rights must not be subject to state governments’ whims
The president addressed the crowd at the Mack Trucks company in Macungie, Pennsylvania. Trump asked the audience if they supported nationwide constitutional carry before announcing that the administration is “working on it.”
National Rifle Association (NRA) President Bill Bachenberg was in the audience, and the president noted that the nation’s oldest and largest Second Amendment rights group endorsed him early in his political career.
And while anti-gun activists warn that more firearms in the people’s hands will bring carnage, the results simply do not support this claim. As gun ownership rises across the U.S., violent crime rates continue to fall even past the pandemic surge.
NRA leader emphasizes group’s support for nationwide constitutional carry
NRA Executive Vice President Doug Hamlin reiterated the organization’s strong support of constitutional carry. In a letter to The Washington Post last week, he noted that the majority of states now recognize this fundamental right and that the Second Amendment remains “strong.”
The NRA further reaffirmed its support for federal efforts to thwart the handful of outlier states that continue to erect every conceivable barrier between upstanding citizens and their gun rights.
“Second Amendment rights don’t end at state lines,” the group posted on X. “NRA is fighting alongside the Trump administration to ensure every law-abiding American can exercise their right to carry nationwide.”
