Virginia State Police Try to Quell Firearm Confiscation Fears

Alarming rumors continue to swirl online over alleged schemes by new Virginia Gov. Abigail Spanberger’s (D) gun control regime. Many believe the pending ban on so-called “assault weapons” will lead to door-to-door confiscation.

Virginia State Police Superintendent nominee Col. Jeffrey S. Katz attempted to quell these discussions this week. He noted that he is aware of the talk of where the recent spate of gun control will lead for law-abiding Virginians.

The nominee admitted that officials recognize fears of waves of law enforcement knocking on doors to check on firearm ownership. He emphasized that he wanted to address the issue “clearly and plainly.”

Official emphasized that there will not be door-to-door confiscation in Virginia

“There is no legislative proposal seeking to do this, and there will not be,” Katz declared on X. “VSP works each day to enhance safety and protect civil liberties. Those liberties were not granted by government and will not be impeded by government. Not now, not ever.”

The nominee added that such a concept is “by its very nature un-American.”

Virginia could follow other states and eliminate its grandfather clause

Spanberger campaigned in a hotly contested gubernatorial race as a moderate, but her actions and those of her supporters as they relate to gun control have been anything but.

SB 749, which targets popular semi-automatic weapons owned by millions of Americans, contains a provision to “grandfather” in current owners of these firearms. However, the individual must have possessed the banned weapon by July 1, 2026.

This, of course, led to concerns of how VSP would enforce this controversial law if Spanberger signed it, as she is fully expected to do. Other states with similar bans grandfathered in current owners, but now some are trying to eliminate that carveout.

One such attempt is currently underway in Rhode Island.

In recent days, State Rep. Teresa Tanzi (D) introduced legislation to end the previous practice and to use “police power” to enforce the state’s “assault weapons” ban, which takes effect this summer.
