Birmingham, Alabama, has the unfortunate distinction of being one of many American cities where violent crime continues to explode. After a particularly brutal weekend the homicide total for the county in 2023 is now up to 183.

Media reports do not paint a complete picture, but another dramatic incident unfolded in the parking lot of a popular restaurant over the weekend.

A Waffle House was the scene Sunday morning of a frightening encounter that led to a fatal shooting. A man is alleged to have threatened to shoot diners at the restaurant before a customer stepped in and confronted him.

The incident was called in to the Sheriff’s Office at approximately 1:30 a.m. Lt. Joni Money told reporters that an “altercation” ensued between a customer and the person allegedly making the threats in the parking lot.

The showdown came before deputies arrived at the location. The person who allegedly shot the suspect fled the scene.

The 26-year-old accused of making the threats was pronounced dead at the Waffle House. Authorities have yet to release his name.

According to Al.com, the day before the early Sunday morning shooting saw three more people killed. One was at the Pita Stop on the southside, another was by a food truck in the Lakeview District and still another fatal shooting happened in a southwest Birmingham residence.

Seemingly more than ever, law-abiding citizens are being put in a position where they are forced to defend themselves against the lawless. The investigation into the Waffle House incident continues, but on the surface it appears that patrons of the restaurant were threatened by the suspect before he was fatally shot.

These scenarios are completely avoidable but arise repeatedly when criminals seek to harm innocent victims. It is no small wonder that the people are arming themselves and taking a stand for their Second Amendment rights.

It’s the only logical thing to expect.
