A Utah woman is in critical condition after being violently attacked in an alleged attempted carjacking. The suspect was also critically wounded when she opened fire to protect herself, but he is now listed in stable condition.

It was last Wednesday at roughly 10:45 p.m. when the unidentified woman visited the EOS Fitness Center in Murray. Exercise clubs are not generally prone to violence, but that just demonstrates the utter unpredictability of modern times.

The intended victim is described as in her late 20s, and she apparently wanted to work out late in the evening. But her plans were disrupted when she was allegedly accosted in the parking lot by a criminal with intent on stealing her vehicle.

The woman produced a weapon to defend herself and shot her alleged attacker in the chest. Unfortunately, he was also able to fire a shot that struck her in the abdomen.

Police described the terrifying incident in a statement. The call came in from the fitness center, and “when officers arrived they learned that it was an attempted carjacking where the victim and suspect both received gunshot wounds.”

The suspect, only identified as a man in his 20s, was able to flee the scene. However, he was later dropped off at the hospital with what the police described as “a critical but stable gunshot wound to the chest.”

Investigators believe the woman was randomly targeted for the carjacking. Officers recovered two weapons at the scene.

One witness reported hearing three gunshots. A female who had just finished a swimming workout said she had talked to the victim as she was leaving the locker room.

She heard a loud noise as she exited the building and saw the victim prone in the parking lot.

“When I came out, she was laying on the ground and she had obviously been super wounded. The only thing we were hearing was that we didn’t know where the shooter was. Some people had thought they ran in, some thought they ran out.”

The terrifying scene was made even more tragic by the shooting of the woman who attempted to defend herself. With any good fortune she will make a full recovery, as she apparently made a valiant effort to stop a violent attack.
