In a perfect world, national reciprocity makes perfect sense. State governments would respect the Second Amendment-guaranteed right to keep and bear arms and minor variations in local laws would not disarm law-abiding citizens for simply crossing a state line.
But in the real world, a traveler who is fully qualified to carry weapons in one state is stripped of that right due to nothing but geography.
Improvement over current anti-gun policies is good, but 2A rights deserve better
National reciprocity is on the table with supporters seeking to require states to recognize qualifications to carry in another, and for many it is a laudable endgame. Prominent 2A group Texas Gun Rights (TGR) begs to differ.
TGR instead declared that, while reciprocity is superior to the current quagmire, it is an imperfect solution at best.
A much more appropriate piece of legislation, the group argued in a statement, is the National Constitutional Carry Act, the best answer to the legal mess.
Group argues that national reciprocity still requires a permission slip
“To be clear, forcing anti-gun states to recognize carry permits from other states would be a major improvement over the current legal minefield,” TGR explained. “But reciprocity still accepts the gun control lobby’s basic premise: That your right to bear arms depends on a government-issued permission slip.”
The Second Amendment advocates emphatically reject that argument.
Instead, they note that Rep. Thomas Massie’s (R-KY) National Constitutional Carry Act is a far superior solution to the current patchwork quilt of confusing laws. Simply put, law-abiding gun owners could carry their weapons in public without needing the government’s okay.
TGR dismissed reciprocity in favor of true respect for Second Amendment rights.
“No watered-down reciprocity. Not another federal permission slip scheme. Not a carveout that protects only those who already paid fees, took classes, submitted paperwork, and received government approval,” the group declared. “REAL Constitutional Carry. Nationwide.”
