Come October 1, semi-automatic pistols with a cruciform trigger bar will be illegal in Connecticut due to third-party use of already prohibited “Glock switches” to convert the handguns to fully automatic mode.
On Monday, after months of trying to work with state officials, the manufacturer filed Glock Inc. v. Griffin in the U.S. District Court for the District of Connecticut.
Facing pressure from multiple states over criminal acts by those who care nothing for the law, Glock had little choice but to respond legally. The National Shooting Sports Foundation (NSSF), the industry trade group, quickly filed a similar suit against the state prohibition.
Lack of official response left Glock and NSSF with little choice
Notably, civilian sales of the Glock Gen 5 and most similar models ceased last year. The company replaced these popular pistols with updated designs it said were “not readily susceptible” to modification.
Starting in July, Glock’s attorneys sought clarification from Connecticut’s attorney general on the prohibition, which passed in May.
Representatives then met with members of the State Police Licensing and Firearms Unit the following month in another attempt to show officials that its models do not fit the definition of a “convertible pistol,” but to no avail.
Once again, authorities target inanimate objects over real criminals
Instead, multiple queries were ignored. Connecticut authorities responded with a letter claiming that they “cannot answer legal questions from private parties pursuant to our legal authority.”
NSSF Senior Vice President and General Counsel Lawrence Keane chastised state officials for attempting to ban legal firearms in common use.
“This law, and similar laws passed in other states, punishes law-abiding citizens by infringing on their Second Amendment rights to legally obtain the weapons they choose to protect themselves and their families against criminals who, by definition, have no respect for life or law,” Keane declared.
The 2A advocate added that Connecticut lawmakers avoid holding people responsible for already illegal acts.
Instead, they “scapegoat the industry and ban an entire class of ordinary firearms, which the U.S. Supreme Court’s Heller decision clearly violates the U.S. Constitution.”
