Property boundary disputes happen, but they are usually settled with surveys and fences–not with a pickaxe and firearm.
That’s the startling scenario that played out in the early evening hours Tuesday in Lehigh Acres, Florida. An argument turned into a frightening confrontation that was only stopped by a ready firearm.
Argument quickly escalated with threat of garden tool
According to the Lee County Sheriff’s Office Violent Crimes Unit, a neighboring homeowner ordered Eddie Jordan II off his property when the two got into a heated argument. The suspect did not.
Instead, Jordan allegedly grabbed a pickaxe and pushed the garden tool into his neighbor’s back, forcing him face-first to the ground. At that point, he reportedly lifted the tool into the air in a threatening manner, creating an obvious life-and-death situation.
The unidentified resident had a concealed firearm and wisely decided this was a good time to use it. He fired one shot, striking his alleged attacker in the lower leg and ending the explosive confrontation.
Shooter wisely reconsidered initial mercy after another dispute
Incredibly, neither Jordan nor the neighbor who defended himself filed a criminal complaint. But the very next day, another heated argument led to the victim changing his mind and asking for charges in the alleged assault.
Jordan was located and arrested the following morning, charged with aggravated battery with a deadly weapon.
As for the homeowner who initially hesitated to press charges, he is in the clear at this stage of the investigation. Investigators quickly concluded that his actions fell well within Florida’s State Your Ground law and were forced by the pickaxe attack.
There are few scenarios more disturbing to imagine than being knocked to the ground and then having your attacker raise a pickaxe and appear ready to strike. This neighborhood dispute would likely have had a far different and tragic outcome without a ready firearm.
