Violence targeting the most vulnerable in the population, including children and older folks, is particularly heinous. But for one Texas man Wednesday afternoon who authorities described as “elderly,” being defenseless was not on his bingo card.
This was not a middle-of-the-night break-in; the suspect reportedly kicked in the front door of the home around 1 p.m. There could be no mistaking his intent.
Homeowner reportedly warned alleged intruder before firing
Houston Police Department officers received a call of a possible home invasion and a shot fired. They arrived to find the suspect suffering from at least one wound delivered by a .38 caliber pistol that the homeowner was able to retrieve.
Investigators believe the resident warned the alleged intruder multiple times that he had a gun and to leave the home, but his warnings went unheeded. His shot didn’t.
The wounded suspect, who has not been identified and was apparently unknown to his intended victim, was taken to an area hospital suffering critical injuries, authorities said. At last report he was in stable condition.
Charges against homeowner would be quite unexpected
Officials gave the perfunctory statement that the details around the potentially deadly confrontation are still being gathered. There was no indication of pending charges, and considering the circumstances, that result would be a surprise.
As the national media is fond of reminding us, Texas appears to be a state in political transition.
But it’s still Texas, and the Second Amendment carries considerable weight, especially when it comes to the inherent right to defend life and property from wrongdoers.
An apparent brazen attack on a senior citizen is one of the many reasons the right to keep and bear arms is sacred to so many. Without the handgun, the Houston man likely would have been simply another compliant victim–and maybe far worse.
