Mahomes Avoids Call for More Gun Control After Parade Shooting

Showing maturity off the field as well as on, Kansas City’s Super Bowl winning quarterback Patrick Mahomes avoided getting dragged into the heated gun control debate.

The team’s most recent championship parade was tragically marred by criminal violence that left one fan dead and several others injured.

He was honored recently as one of Time magazine’s “Most Influential People.” In his magazine profile, Mahomes was asked about the deadly Super Bowl parade shooting, and his response was telling.

Mahomes reflected on the Feb. 14 tragedy and noted that action must be taken against criminal violence. However, when it came to gun control, he said it requires “education” and therefore declined to take a stand.

The quarterback added, “I don’t want to make a quick response to something that takes a lot of education to really learn and make a swaying comment based off that.”

Mahomes added, “But I know we have to find a solution of some way to make this stuff stop.”

At least one Chiefs teammate did not follow the same measured path after the parade tragedy. Defensive end Charles Omenihu posted on X, formerly Twitter, his admonition for more strident restrictions.

“When are we going to fix these gun laws? How many more people have to die to say enough is enough?”

But for Mahomes, he followed the logic he displayed on gun issues when he refused to make an endorsement in the 2024 presidential race. He explained, “I don’t want to pressure anyone to vote for a certain president…I want people to use their voice, whoever they believe in, I want them to do the research.”

And it’s not as though Mahomes is simply apolitical. He pushed the NFL to issue a statement condemning the police killing of George Floyd in 2020. He also encouraged Americans to vote in that year’s presidential election, though in that case he also declined to endorse a particular candidate.
