Keeping up with California’s latest infringements on the right to keep and bear arms is a full-time job. You’d think Golden State lawmakers would have more to do with their time than harass law-abiding citizens, but apparently not.
Anti-gunners introduced a bill last week to mandate that potential firearm purchasers undergo a state-approved training course. According to SB 948, these people must prove their worthiness to participate in Second Amendment-related activities.
2A advocates wasted no time blasting the latest proposed infringement on gun rights
The bill’s language demands that a potential gun purchaser after July 1, 2028, complete a training course of at least eight hours that includes instruction on firearm safety and live-fire exercise on a shooting range.
Gun Owners of America (GOA) quickly denounced the scheme in a post on X. “The bill would require a state-approved class and live-fire training just to purchase a firearm. Brought to you by the same genius Sen. that passed background checks for barrels. Jesse Arreguin.”
He led last year’s push to require background checks for firearm PARTS, just to be clear.
No other constitutionally protected right is under this kind of attack
To be even clearer, this is a constitutional right that California officials want upstanding citizens to jump through an increasing number of hoops to exercise. At no point is a “license” required to freely speak or worship as one chooses.
Yet Second Amendment opponents think nothing of throwing burdens of time and expense at people who want nothing more than to enjoy sporting traditions and be prepared to defend themselves.
These are not noble goals for anti-gunners. Their abject refusal to deal with the real issues and go after inanimate objects instead leaves 2A advocates with no choice but to mount legal challenges against these atrocities.
