Divorce is a messy business, but the battles should be fought in a courtroom between lawyers. The regrettable choice that some who are going through this trauma decide to take has far worse potential consequences than a legal war.
It was Saturday morning in Mount Dora, Florida, when a suspect, later identified as David Michael Lutz, allegedly attempted to break into his estranged wife’s boyfriend’s house.
Witnesses told investigators that the suspect started by banging on the front door and windows before bursting through a sliding glass door. Not the typical actions of a burglar who randomly chooses a target and wants to get in and out quietly and quickly.
First responders find suspect suffering from two bullet wounds
According to the incident report, three people were waiting for first responders on the front porch when they rolled up. They told the new arrivals that all doors and windows to the residence were locked, and that Lutz only got in by breaking through a bedroom door.
From the incident report, “They directed me inside to [victim’s] bedroom, where I observed officers from the Mount Dora Police Department rendering aid to a White male, later identified as Michael Lutz (suspect).”
The boyfriend used a .45 to end the threat when his bedroom door was breached.
Intended victim appears to be in the clear after violent confrontation
The day got worse for Lutz as he was rushed to the hospital for emergency treatment. There is no word on his condition, but he faces one count of burglary and likely other charges when he recuperates enough to be taken to jail.
Stephanie Earley of the Lake County Sheriff’s Office told reporters that the suspect managed to break into the bedroom. “He forcefully entered, causing damage to a door, which is where he got shot two times.”
Because the boyfriend and intended victim reside in Florida, he should be free to go on with his life if the facts of the investigation hold up. Earley knew this, adding that “the residents have the right to protect themselves.”
